Description
Limonene
Limonene gives citrus peel its smell. It is the terpene behind the sharpness of orange, lemon and lime, and it turns up in a very wide range of plants.
What terpenes do
Terpenes are the oils a plant stores in its trichomes, the tiny glands on its surface. They decide how a variety smells, and they are the reason two plants of the same species can be so different in character.
Formulators buy single terpenes to rebuild an aroma, lift a dull blend or push a mix in a particular direction. Limonene is what you reach for when the top note needs to be citrus.
Where it is used
- Flavouring in food, drink and chewing gum
- Added to ointments and creams during pharmaceutical manufacture
- Fragrance and solvent in cleaning and personal care products
- Vape and oil blends, to sharpen the aroma
This is limonene on its own rather than a ready mixed blend, so you can use it by itself or as one part of a wider profile.
